POSITION SUMMARY:The Senior Vice President, Economic Development (SVP, ED) is the key executive responsible for strategy, operations and projects of the Chamber's economic development initiatives, which includes workforce, transportation/distribution/logistics, automotive and market diversification programs. The SVP, ED will lead a team of professionals and will work in close collaboration with public sector and private sector leadership within and beyond the Chamber. The SVP, ED will be responsible for managing and representing the economic development program, and advancing its objectives and strategies, as well as, provide leadership in managing investor relations, facilitating fundraising and managing resources.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor degree required; advanced degree in business, law, public administration or related field is preferred. A Certified Economic Developer designation is desirable. Minimum of 10 years of leadership experience in economic development or other related field. Strong fundraising / revenue generation experience a plus.
Proven manager and leader able to motivate a team to achieve results. Displays excellent collaborative, leadership and communication skills, including the ability to prepare and deliver compelling presentations and the ability to instill confidence and generate excitement. Possess the ability, diplomacy, initiative, presence and social skills to work effectively with a diverse group of individuals, including corporate C-suite and government representatives at all levels (local to federal) and other stakeholders, to achieve results. Excellent media management skills with a sensitivity to the tone and content that will be most effective in presenting the economic development program in regional, national and international markets. Proven experience in closing complex financial deals and quantifying performance results.
Significant knowledge and/or experience in economic development:
National or international experience in relevant or related fields;
Experience in a national or regionally recognized economic development program;
Understanding of workforce issues and how they relate to economic development;
Understanding of manufacturing industries and understanding of automotive industry a plus;
Established relationships with corporate and economic development leaders across the nation and/or internationally.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES / FUNCTIONS:
25% Work with public and private economic development partners in planning, coordinating and successfully executing economic development initiatives, including investment missions, trade missions, delegate hosting, and trade shows and related projects, domestically and internationally.
Maintain and enhance relationships with key regional economic development organizations, particularly the State and county organizations and City of Detroit stakeholders.
Serve as a lead executive involved in recruitment of new business to the Detroit Region, from initial relationships, to development of the prospect and potential project, through creation of the deal with local economic developers, relocation and ultimate retention. Provide executive leadership and management of the Chamber's economic development team engaged in these processes.
Represent the economic development program at official functions on the local, regional, state, national and international level. As appropriate, serve as the spokesperson for the Chamber on economic development with the media, government and other constituencies.
25% Provide leadership and guidance to the Chamber's workforce, market diversification, automotive, transportation/distribution/logistics strategies and other specific project initiatives. Work in collaboration with partner organizations as appropriate.
20% Provide leadership in generating sufficient, sustainable resources (fundraising, grants, etc.) to fund the Chamber's economic development program, group and administrative support. Maintain management responsibility for fiscal matters and the annual operating budget.
15% Manage, develop and provide leadership, direction and support to the economic development team of staff.
5% Coordinate with research team and marketing teams members on the direction of research, collaterals, messages, communications, and campaigns that support the Detroit Region's economic development initiatives.
5% Participate as a member of the Chamber's executive management team and work with colleagues and staff at all levels to achieve the overall goals of the organization as it seeks to enhance business and quality of life in the Detroit Region.
5% Perform other duties as assigned by the President & CEO.
